Etymology

Devon Bridge, over the river Devon supra 3, was earlier Morkerbrigge 1280Ass , bridge of Markall juxta Newerk 1490 Brown, Marcall bridge , Marcham bridge al. Moore carre bridge 1650ParlSurv , Markall Bridge , Marcom Bridge 1677 CoRec.Cf. also Morkercroft t. Ed 1Welbeck near by. The older name may, as suggested by the 1650 reference, be a compound of OE  mor, 'marsh' and carr (from ON  kiarr, v. infra 286).
