Etymology

Castle Hill marks the site of the Romano-British fort of Margidunum . Near here is marked in Gibson's edition of Camden's map (1722) Old-wark spring . The name means 'old fortification.' Earlier references to it are Aldewerch c. 1230Thurgarton , in via de Fosse apud Aldewerke 1289Ass . Cf. Newark supra 199.
