Etymology

Stragglethorpe is first recorded as Straggelthorpe 1796Recov .There is a place similarly named in Lincolnshire for which we have early forms Tragertorp , Stragerthorp from Fees (1212, 1242). The latter name is somewhat difficult of explanation and it may be that the Nottinghamshire name has no connection with it. The suggestion may even be hazarded that the name is really a name of the late nickname type. The name would seem to be applied to an area containing some three or four small farms and it may be that it should be interpreted as 'straggling þorp.'
