Etymology

The early forms suggest confusion between two early English names of allied form and origin, viz. Cortel and Cyrtel . Cyrtel is found in Kirklington supra 170 and in Costock seems to have replaced earlier Cortel . 'stoc of the people of Cortel or Cyrtel .'
