Etymology

Sansom Wood, Sansomwood Fm is Sampson Wode t. Hy 6Newstead , Samson Wode c. 1490Survey , Sampsonwode 16th Dugd vi, Sawnsom Wood 1511 BorRec, Sampson Wood juxta Calverton 1549FF . The tithes of Hugh Samson in Epperstone formed part of the original endowment of Hertford Priory (c. 1090 Dugd iii, 300). In the 12th century, William Sampson gave land in Epperstone to Thurgarton Priory. In his charter, he speaks of the land as lying “between my wood and the wood of the canons.” It is not unlikely that William's wood is identical with the Sansom Wood of modern times.
