Etymology

This is the OE  burh-tun, 'fortified farmstead,' but with the first part of the compound from the genitive byrh rather than from the nominative burh . Cf. Bearton (PN Herts 9). Geoffrey de Jorz held the manor in 1235 (Fees), the modern Joyce being due to popular etymology.
