Etymology

Sconce Hills, King's Sconce (both 6″), Queen's Sconce.Cf. the Sconce in Newarke meadowes 1649ParlSurv , Sconce Hill c. 1825 O.S. The term sconce is an adaptation from Dutch  schans , 'small fort.' Fortifications were erected here by the Royalist troops in the Civil War. Sconce Hills and Queen's Sconce are really in Hawton parish. Cf. Sconce Field c. 1840TA (Hawton).
