Etymology

Garbythorpe (6″) is Karberthorp 1280Ass , Garberthorpe , Garbarthorpe 1581, 1584 Wills, Garbythorpe 1640 ParReg. Thoroton (51) calls the place Gerbodthorp , and derives its name from Gerbod de Eschaud who received Clifton and Langar from Henry II. Thoroton was specially well acquainted with this neighbourhood and its records and his explanation is possible. It is not supported by the forms which are now available but it is clear that the first element is a personal name, whatever its original form may have been.
