Etymology

Flawford Fm is Flan (s )flore (sic)1330 QW, Ffauflour 1338 Larking, Hospitallers in England (Camden Society lxv), Flaforth 1634 ParReg, Flawfore , Flaufore 1677 Thoroton. There is no ford here and the second element is clearly OE  flor, 'floor, pavement.' The first element is OScand  flaga , 'slab of stone,' or its lost OE  cognate *flage , the name being descriptive of the site of the house. Cf. Flawith (PN ERY 188) and Flawforth infra 239. There was also a Flageford 13thRufford in Kirton, belonging to Rufford. This is actually 'flagstone ford.'
