Etymology

This name probably goes back to an original OE  æschām , 'ash tree farm,' but the cognate OScand  askr was substituted at an early date. Lanum is Laneham infra 53. In 1086 the village was a berewick of the Archbishop of York's manor of Laneham, and his successors continued to be lords of the place until the 19th century.
