Etymology

Yarwell is half-a-mile from the Nene, but the original settlement may have been by Yarwell Mill on the Nene itself. Here there is a spring marked on the O.S. map, and the gear may be a fishing pool or pools on the Nene, thus 'spring of (or by) the yair (s ) or fishing-pools.' OE  gearuwe , 'yarrow-grass,' is also a possibility, hence 'spring by which yarrow grows.'
