Etymology

Hinton is Hinton (e )1086 DBet passim with variant spelling Hynton , Hinton by Byfeld 1279 Pat, Hinton by Wodeford 1380 Cl, Hyneton 1199 FF. This is probably from OE  hīgna -tūn , 'farm of the hīwan ,' v. higna , tun . The hiwan might be members of any household, not necessarily a monastic one, though that is the commonest use of the term.
