Etymology

This is probably a compound of ODan  Sule or ON  Súla , a pers. name, and by. Cf. Sulby (PN IOM 545), c. 1376 Chron.Manniae Sulaby . Alternatively it might be a compound of OE  sulh , 'furrow, trench' (cf. Sulgrave supra 36 and Souldrop PN BedsHu 42). The Abbey lies on a stream, but the valley is very shallow. The 1243 form is in favour of sulh .
