Etymology

Studborough Hill is Stroteberewe t. Ric 2Rental , Struteberue 15thDaventry , Strutburgh Hylle 1471 AD i, Studbury -Hill 1712 Morton. This is probably from OE  strūt -beorg , 'hill of strife or contention.' For such an OE  word *strūt , v. NEDs. v. strut , sb. 1, and cf. Strowtham (1548LRMB ) on the bounds of Cobham and Byfleet (Sr) and Strotfurlong (t. Hy 7MinAcct ) in Ewell (Sr). The hill lies on the Staverton-Catesby boundary. For such a name cf. Threapwood (Ch), Threepwood (PN NbDu 196), Threapland (Cu, Y), Fleet Fm and Flitnell Barn infra 84, 85 and possibly Tablehurst (PN Sx 329).
