Etymology

'Stone ford,' v. stan , ford . This is the part of the town of Stamford (L) which lies to the south of the Welland in Northants. Barne is for Baron , this part of Stamford being known as Stamford Baron . Peck's Annals of Stamford (261) suggests that “the reason for this name might be from its being part of those lands which the abbot of Peterborough held per Baroniam , to distinguish it from Stamford, which was always called the King's Borough.”
