Etymology

The first element here may be the word slip used of mud or slime in the Promptorium (c. 1440), and have reference to the soil here. Cf. also Slipe Fm infra 239. Another alternative is to take it as containing the same word slipe found in Slipe Fm (PN Sx 280), and denoting strip of land. Cf. slipe infra 273.v. tun .
