Etymology

This is probably from Sigewulfes -tūn , 'Sigewulf 's farm,' v. tun . Siulf is common as a contracted form of this name already in the OE period. The forms with r are due to ready confusion with the common word silver , ME  silvre , sulvre . For the forms with sh , cf. Syresham infra 58.
