Etymology

This is probably a compound of hangra and OE  scyt (t )el , 'shuttle,' 'dart,' 'bolt.' The sense in which the latter word is used must remain uncertain. The resemblance of the hill on which Shutlanger stands to either a shuttle or a bolt is not particularly obvious. The name may be descriptive of a wood from which shuttles , i.e. 'gate-bars,' are cut. Cf. Mounterley infra 160.
