Etymology

Shotwell Mill is Schotewelle 1285Ass (p) (bis), Shotelmyll t. Hy 7MinAcct , Shottwell feild t. ElizLRMB . This is probably from OE  sceōta -wiell , 'trout-stream.' Cf. the name Shotenewell (t. Hy 3 AD iii), a field-name in Brixworth, containing sceōtena the gen. pl. of sceōta .
