Etymology

Cotton Camp (6″). This is the last trace on the map of more than one manor called Cotes or Cotton in Raunds and the neighbouring parish of Ringstead. In the 12th century Survey we have mention of Cotes and alia Cotes , but there were already three distinct holdings. So also in 1275 (RH) we have mention of Parva Cotes , Media Cotes and Cotes . Media Cotes appears as Middelcot ' (1253Ass ), Middelcotes by Raundes (1303 Pat), Middle Cotton 1571FF . In 1330 (QW) we have mention of Wylinecotys , Mullecotes and Litlecotes . The last is the Parva Cotes of 1275.Mullecotes is first mentioned as Milnecotes (1312FF ), later Milnecoten (1317Ass ), Mulne Cotes al. Chamberleincotes (1408 IpmR), Mill Cotton grene (1591DuLaMiscBks ). It was clearly by a mill (v. myln ), and it had once belonged to the Chamberlein family (cf. 1291 Ipm). Wylewynecotes is first mentioned in 1307 Ipm, Wylewenecotes 1314 Ipm, Wellewenecotes 1330PeterbA , Wilwencotes 1373 IpmR, Wyllyngcotes 1423FF , Wylyenecotes 1434FF , Willowcotes 1530FF . This was a holding of Gilbert de Clare, who also held Middelcotes (1307 Ipm). It would seem to be 'cottages by the willows,' v. welig . We have mention also of a Westcotes juxta Raundes (1317Ass ) and Cotes juxta Ryngstede (1330Ass ) and a Cotis Bidun (1284 FA), so called from the holding of the Bidun family (1191 P). Bridges (ii, 190) distinguishes West Cotton in Raunds, Mill Cotton in Ringstead, and another manor which he calls Mallows Cotton .
