Etymology

This is a difficult name. If the second element is stan we may have an exact parallel in the Rodestan of BCS 1127 (a Wiltshire Charter), which is again mentioned in a perambulation of 1575.This may be a compound of rod, 'clearing,' hence 'stone in a clearing,' or much more probably, it denotes a stone used as the socket of a rood (OE  rōd ) or cross.
