Etymology

The forms of this name resemble those of Quainton (PN Bk 108), Quinton (PN Wo 42), and Quinton (Gl), except for earlier and more persistent forms with Quin - rather than Quen -. They may come from OE  Cwēningtūn , 'farm of a woman named *Cwēna ' (cf. Quainton loc. cit .). Karlström suggests (ZONF vii, 251) OE  cwenena -tūn , 'farm of the women,' cf. Whenby (PN NRY 30), which denotes similarly a 'by belonging to women.'
