Alwalton Gull Road

Early-attested site in the Parish of Peterborough

Etymology

Alwalton Gull Road (6″). Cf. Allerton Gull 1753 Fenland NQ ii. It is probably to be associated with the family of Geoffrey de Alewalton who bought land at Peterborough in 1234 (Cl), and must have come from Alwalton (Hu). In 1315 (Ass ) there is mention also of William Lyntot de Alwolton in connection with the parish. gull is the same word which is found in Gull Field (PN BedsHu 205), a variant of goule , 'watercourse.' The EDD gives the sense 'a deep gutter where water runs,' and notes that it is used in Northamptonshire.
