Etymology

'Maidens' spring,' v. wielle and cf. Maidford supra 41 and Maidenwell (L), Maidenwell '1212 Fees. Bridges (ii, 45) tells us that 'near the church is Maidwell , a very quick flowing spring.'So also he tells us (ii, 47) that 'there were anciently two churches, one dedicated to the Blessed Virgin the other to S. Peter , long since destroyed.'
