Etymology

There can be little doubt that the second element in this name is the OE  word *etsce , *ætsce , discussed under Cleeve Axe (PN Sx 511). One sense of that word (ME  axe , exe ) seems to be 'pasture.' The first element is OE  bula , 'bull,' and the whole name would mean 'bull pasture.' The second element may repeat itself in Exhawe (1249For ) which was immediately adjacent, and perhaps in Excellent supra 162. Further examples of this element have now been noted in Surrey, viz. Mapledrake in Ewhurst, Mapeldresshe 1241Ass (p), Holdemabiltrix , Olde Mapuldriks 1436, 1524 (SrRecSoc xxxii, 59–60), in which it is compounded with the tree-name mapuldor , and possibly in Longrethenex (1370 AD ii), a field-name in Camberwell.
