Etymology

'The long town,' v. lang , port . Cf. Lamport (PN Bk 48), Langport (So), a lost Lamport in Eastbourne (PN Sx 430), and possibly Landport (ib. 320). This 'town' has long since lost its importance, like most of the other ports . Bridges (ii, 110) notes “The Saxon word Port not always implying the Latin Portus an haven or sea-port but often simply a village or town.”
