Hollow Wood

Early-attested site in the Parish of Harringworth

Historical Forms

  • wood of Halgh 1306 Ipm
  • boscus de Halugh 1333 BM

Etymology

Hollow Wood is wood of Halgh 1306 Ipm, boscus de Halugh 1333 BM. 'Wood in the nook or corner,' v. healh , with later confusion with 'hollow' from holh . It is probable that Hollow Wood was originally the name for the whole of the large wood here, now divided into two parts, since the name is clearly to be associated with Hollow Bottom supra 161.
