Wharf Lodge

Early-attested site in the Parish of Harrington

Historical Forms

  • Harrington-warth 1791 Bridges

Etymology

Wharf Lodge is Harrington-warth 1791 Bridges. The place is on a hill-top away from any water and can have no connection with the modern word 'wharf.' The 18th cent, form suggests the possibility of ON  varða , 'cairn, heap of stones.' There are fields here called Warth , the local pronunciation still varying between warth and wharf .
