Etymology

Standing Well (6″). The field-name Stanhulc . 1312 H de B gives rise to Stanhill Thorns 1766 TAB , Standing Thorns 1828, 1878, 1926, and it may be presumed that Stanewelle c. 1312 H de B, Stanwell 1791 Bridges in the same way has given us Standing Well . Cf. also Stangrove (Stangrave 1269 Ipm) al. Standing Grove, a field-name in Latton (Ess).
