Hunsbury Hill

Early-attested site in the Parish of Hardingstone

Historical Forms

  • Hunsbarow 1712 Morton
  • Hunsborrowe Hill 1739 Camden(Gough)
  • Hunsborough Hill 1791 Bridges

Etymology

Hunsbury Hill is Hunsbarow 1712 Morton, Hunsborrowe Hill 1739 Camden (Gough), Hunsborough Hill 1791 Bridges. The burh refers to the ancient 'camp' here, as in Rainsborough supra 56. The first element is no doubt a pers. name but the forms are too late for any certainty.
