Etymology

OE  Golda is recorded as a pers. name, and there may have been a corresponding strong i -form Gyldi , which would yield OE  Gyldesburh , 'the burh of one Gyldi .' Most borough -names go back to OE  beorg, but this is clearly a burh-name. Bridges (i, 566) says that on the top of Burrows or Borough hill were still to be seen remains of the encampment which gave rise to the name. See further Morton 524.
