Provost Lodge

Early-attested site in the Parish of Glapthorn

Etymology

Provost Lodge. Cf. Provestes Closes 1549 Pat, Provost Closes 1642 Woods Rept, Provey Lodge 1739 Camden (Gough), 1823 B.This is a relic of the 'Provost's Manor' (VCH ii, 555) which endowed a provost and twelve chaplains in the church of St Andrew at Cotterstock. The form Provey seems to preserve the pronunciation elsewhere shown by the spelling provo (v. NED s. v .).
