  • Nottewode 1373 Pat

Etymology

Knotwood Fm is Notwod (e )1367, 1374For , Nottewode 1373 Pat. Cf. also Nottepokesle (boscus )t. Ed 1PeterbB , which must have reference to the same wood, as Puxley (infra 102) is close at hand. OE  hnott , 'bald, close-cut,' is applied to a thorn in hnottan ðorn (BCS 789), and to a willow in hnottan seale (BCS 674), doubtless with the sense 'cut, pollarded.' So here, 'pollarded wood.'
