Etymology

Honey Hill is Grethonehill 1540LRMB . It is just possible that this is really 'great hone hill,' the first element being hone , 'stone, rock' (OE  hān ). Morton (99) speaks of 'cemented masses of gravel as hard almost as flint standing out above the surface,' in the neighbouring parish of Welford.
