Danes Moor

Early-attested site in the Parish of Edgcote

Historical Forms

  • Danysmore 1467 Bodl
  • Dunsmore 1779 F
  • Dunsmoor 1826 B

Etymology

Danes Moor is Danysmore 1467Bodl , Dunsmore 1779 F, Dunsmoor 1826 B. This was the site of a battle in the Wars of the Roses, fought in 1467 at Hegecote seu Danysmore . Unfortunately, the origin of the name is entirely obscure. Tradition of course speaks of a battle of Danes and English (cf. infra ), but the form would then have to be Denemore from the gen. pl. Dena .
