Etymology

Horn Wood is Hurnewod (e )c. 1220, 1287For , Hurnewud 1228, 1246 Cl, Hirnewode 1253 Pat, Hernewod (e )1255 BM, 1287For , Hornewod 1287For , le Abbottes Hornewood 1550 Pat. It lies in a corner (v. hyrne ) of the parish, hence probably the name. The Abbey of St James, Northampton, held land in Easton Maudit (1316 FA). Bridges (ii, 163) speaks of “Abbat's Hall -Wood , now corruptly Hornwood ,” but the corruption is clearly the other way round.
