Etymology

The ground here is much broken, and this name may be a compound of dingle and leah . The word dingle is of obscure origin (v. NED s. v .), but is found elsewhere in place-names (cf. PN Wo 390 s. n. dingle ). Hence, 'leah marked by one or more valleys.' Dr Smith suggests that this may alternatively be from OE  Dynningleah , 'Dynne 's clearing,' with the same loss of a syllable as in Finghall (PN NRY 247).
