Etymology

'Watch hill,' v. weard , dun and cf. Warden Hill (PN BedsHu 97) and Warden (PN NbDu s. n .). The reference is to the prominent 'Warden Hill' to the east of the village. Chipping , 'market,' v. cieping . West in relation to Warden (Beds) the Abbot of which held lands here (Bridges i, 111).
