Etymology

Newbold Grounds Fm is Neubold '1203 Asset freq to 1469 AD ii with variant spelling New (e )bold ', Nobold 1702 Poll, Newbold al. Nobald 1708Recov . 'New building,' v. boðl and cf. Newbottle infra 56. This name gives us the first example of the word ground (s ), which is very common in West Northamptonshire farm and field-names. The term ground is used in this county (v. EDD) for a 'large upland grazing field' and the plural is used of an 'outlying grazing farm' (ib.). The earliest example that has been noted is Grundes in Eydon (1281 AD ii).
