Etymology

Hostage Wood is possibly identical with Haspehege 1227 Cl, Haspehegge t. Ed 3For . If this identification is correct, we seem to have a compound of OE  hæpse , 'hasp, fastening,' and hecg, 'hedge,' describing perhaps some locked enclosure.
