Etymology

Seawell Fm is Sewell (e )1086 DBet freq to 1823 B, Sewewell 12th Survey, Seuewell 1220, 1235, 1242 Fees, Seuwell 1337 Pat, Seywell Close , Seawell Coppice 1681Rental , Se (y )well 1761EnclA , Seywell 1930 Kelly. There are numerous springs in the neighbourhood, and this is probably for seofonwiellan , 'seven springs.' A tradition of seven springs is common in place- names, cf. seofenwyllas (BCS 165), Sinwell (Gl), 1248 Ass Suvenewell , Sowell (PN D 565), Seven Wells Fm in Stoke Doyle and Seven Springs nr. Coberley (Gl), the reputed source of the Thames, a field called Seven Wells in Apethorpe (Nth), and possibly Sewell's Pond supra 23. See also Sywell infra 139.
