Empty Spinney

Early-attested site in the Parish of Barnwell St Andrew

Historical Forms

  • le Hympeheye 1285 Buccleuch, Ass
  • le Imphey 1450 Deed

Etymology

Empty Spinney (6″) may be the place called le Hympeheye 1285Buccleuch , Ass , le Imphey 1450Deed . This is clearly the same as the Imphaghe which lies behind Limbo (PN Sx 117), except that we have (ge)hæg rather than haga as the second element. The meaning is 'enclosure made of imps , i.e. saplings or shoots.'
