Etymology

Hills and Holes is a tract of broken ground, the site of former large quarries of 'Barnack rag' which provided most of the building material for the abbeys of Peterborough, Croyland, Thorney, Ramsey and most of the churches of Holland in Lincolnshire and the Marshland in Norfolk (Bridges ii, 489).
