Shooters Hill

Early-attested site in the Parish of Addington, Great and Little

Historical Forms

  • Scitershul 1232 WellsR
  • Shetereshelde 1331 Ass

Etymology

Shooters Hill is Scitershul 1232 WellsR. This name probably means what it says, and the more correct ME  form would be schetereshul . Presumably the hill was so called because used for archery practice. Cf. Shooters Hill (K), earlier Shetereshelde 1331Ass , Sheteresselde 1374, Shetereshill 1394 Pat, in which the second element is OE  h(i)elde, 'slope,' and Schytereshulle in Easton Neston (1281 AD ii).
