Etymology

The forms are difficult but are perhaps most easily explained if we take the name to be derived from the ON  personal name Víkingr (LindN) and tun. The voicing of intervocalic k is evidenced in many other English place-names. Cf. Wiganthorpe 35infra and Wigston Magna (Lei), DBWichingestone .
