Etymology

The name referred originally to Hayburn Beck, v. burna . As Hayburn was within the bounds of the forest of Scalby (a royal hunting ground, cf. Cl and P passim ) the first element is probably ME  hay 'part of a forest fenced off for hunting'; hence 'brook by the hunting enclosure' (cf. Scalby Hay 109supra ), v. (ge)hæg.
