Etymology

The first element is probably the ON  by-name Skvaðra , which also had a form Skoðra (LindBN). Lind supposes that this was an old place-name but it seems more likely, as Professor Ekwall suggests, that Skvaðra is an old by-name derived from skvaðra , in the sense of 'chatter, talk.' The second element is ON  skjalf , 'shelf, seat,' v. Raskelf 26supra .
