Etymology

ME  sc , z were AN  devices for representing the sound ts ; early forms like Bozhale , therefore, indicate an OE  form Bōtesh (e )ale , meaning 'Bot's nook of land' from the OE  personal Bōt and h(e)alh. The early loss of medial e is probably due to Scand infl. where the gen. is simply s ; cf. Cossall (Nt) which not infrequently appears as Cozale though DB has Coteshale , and Foston 39infra .
