Etymology

Alne stands on the river Kyle to which the name must have referred originally. It is derived from some British name similar to Ptolemy's Alauna (= Allen, Scotland) or Alaunos (= Alne, Nb), which sometimes appears as OE  *lōn (v. RNY 11).
