Etymology

'The tūn of Thurgar ', an AScand pers.n. from ODan , OSwed  Thorger , OWScand  Þorgeirr . The name is discussed by Insley 405 f. In England OScand  -geirr was replaced by OE  -gār . As a compound of an OScand pers.n. and OE  tūn, Thurgarton belongs to the so-called Grimston hybrids (v. Insley in Hoops). One of the DB spellings ends with the ampersand. Schram writes Turgartunet .
